any ideas if there any insurers who will consider past insurance as a named driver as counting under no claims discount?

When I first started learning to drive my parents added me as a named driver to the policy on my Mum's car (which was owned by my Dad and insured in his name. He also had his own car). She died just before I passed my test and I then had almost exclusive use of her car for the next 4 years, but was still a named driver on the policy in my Dad's name. When I then went on to buy my own car I was getting really high quotes until out of frustration I mentioned to the person at one company I'd called about having pretty much had my own car for 4 years and he put me on hold while talked to the underwriters who said they'd give me the equivalent of a 3 year no claims discount which really made a difference.
This was almost 9 years ago and I can't remember the name of the company, but I'd recommend you calling up various insurers and explaining your situation and you'll hopefully find someone who'll help you out.0
