EDF not sent bill since July 07

We have our gas and electricity from EDF and have done for quite a few years.

Yesterday we received our electricity bill and it said bill for this period was £466!, and after our Direct Debit payments it still left £290 to pay.

On closer inspection we realised that the period they were billing us was from July 2007!. I immediately looked for last quarters bill but could not find it.

It appears we have not been sent a bill since July 2007, easy to forget as we just pay with DD.

The bill also listed payments each month from August to January but nothing since then.
I called them and immediately the guy said theres a problem with your account, the computer has been unable to produce a bill since July and as such the computer started to refuse the DD payments we thought we were making since January, so we have not paid January, February, March and now April! at £55 a time.

I know we should have kept a better eye on this but DD is meant to give you peace of mind.

He said the bill I had got had been produced manually this week, and just said it was an I.T problem and they didnt know when it would be sorted out.
Its already been going on 10 months and they knew about it and didnt actually send a letter to tell us.

This is the second time they have had an "I.T" problem with our account in 3 years, last time they had estimated our readings for so long we rang up with our own readings and still got estimated bill,we even saw someone reading our meter and a week later they sent another estimated bill. Then we got a snotty letter saying that they legally had to read the meter and we must book an appointment for a reader to come out! they did and yet another estimate arrived!.

It resulted, after about 18 months of this, that they said we had used about 10,000 units more than we had!. They said because the figures were so different the computer would not accept the correction. It took about 2 years to get that sorted.

I said yesterday to them that this is the last straw and I would be switching supplier, and he basically told me that while this issue was still unresolved I couldnt change!

Im calling EW on monday but does anyone know where I stand?

They can only stop a transfer if you are in debt with them, not (I don't think) because they have unresolved issues with their billing arrangements.

Although I suppose if they haven't accepted your DD payments since January, you could well be in debt with them so yes they can stop transfer.

    Also,

Is a pity you didn't take up with EW at that time as "computer sez no" is an inexcusable excuse IMHO

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Yes we are £290 in debt with them, obviously that money has been spent on other things as we assumed it had been paid each month.

We cant afford to pay any more each month to make up the debt now so basically we cannot leave them.

And the first instance was taken up by Energywatch, it was only their intervention that got it sorted that quickly.
  • Glad you took up first instance with EW and sorry you are in current position.

The only advice I can offer going forward it to pay more attention to your bank statements in future.
