Free range eggs

Hi all,

Went to my local market and discovered that every Saturday there is a stall there selling eggs from the local farm, only £1 for a dozen medium!! It costs me £1.29 in M's for half a dozen FR!!

Was well chuffed and will be going every Saturday from now on!

I buy my eggs from a stall at the farmers market - I paid £2.30 for a tray of 30 jesterday - 92p a doz.:j These were properly stamped as well.

I saw some eggs in a farm shop a few weeks ago which had 'free range' on the shelf 'barn eggs' on the boxes and battery codes on the eggs!!

I go to the source now so I can hopefully be more sure of what I am buying.

My local farmers market sells a half dozen for £1.20 and thats the cheapest i have seen. I am seriously considering paying £5 for a tray of free range thats 30 eggs, any ideas on how long they will last - I need to work out if I will use them all up before their best before date. Is it a couple of weeks or is it longer??

  • Well done :)

Think I might check out my local market too, as we like to eat Free Range.

My mate says it's cheapest to go to the Butcher's shops, or the Farms.

can anyone tell me what the stamped number should be for free range? I did know once but forgot to write it down... OH gets eggs from the butchers - he says they're FR but I have my doubts.

I've been on the look out recently for signs outside people's houses saying "eggs for sale" as that's another way to get a bargain. My daughters have their dance class at a village hall, and sometimes there are eggs for sale left in the lobby - I think they ask for 75p for 6 - you just put your money in a tin and try to remember to bring the empty egg box for next time.

I sell our excess free-range eggs (usually only about 2 or 3 dozen) at a car boot sale at £1.50 a dozen for both chicken and ducks. The cost of feed has rocketed and at £1.50 I'm selling at a losss, but the birds are my pets rather than a money making exercise.

Someone else at the boot sale sells eggs for £1 a tray but I do wonder where they come from at that price.

I used to get mine from a guy in the next village, who used to leave them outside with an honesty box, I think we paid 60p for a half dozen (about a year ago), both chicken and duck eggs. Nowhere near me does that now though :(

i've started buying free range from the local newsagent, he sells them for 69p per 1/2 doz, it is stamped on the eggs. He gets them fromthe dairy that deliver his milk (that is cheaper than sains as well.

might be worth checking out your local independent shops to see what they have to offer.

dh brought me some 'free range' eggs from the local fish market but im sure they were battery according to the codes (loose in a basket) and not cheap. im going to check when i'm in that area again and if they are battery i'll ring the council. hes ripping people off and profiteering:mad:
