So I hear nPower are a little bit tricksy... certainly seems that way.

Hello,

Just a quick message to say I am new to the forum - and that this is a quick email just outlining my situation before I drag myself to work.

I am a student, living in a rented property and have been for the past 10-11 months. Up until now we've been paying quite reasonable gas/electricity bills - but just recently we've been given bills for almost £400 and £300 gas and electric. This is WAY above the average £60 or so bills we've been seeing. nPower say they've underestimated us - we say they should have been estimating us properly in the first place. We're stuck between a rock and a hard place especially as we're moving house at the end of the week and need to know what we can do. We're students in London too so its not as if we can really afford it!

If you've got any questions I can answer that will help bring advice quicker, please ask and I will try my best to answer them asap!

Suffice to say - I believe we're getting screwed over.

Hope you are not students of Finance or Business.
There is no substitute for knowing your exact consumption in kwh's. How many in your accommodation? Is anyone being profligate. Is there one person responsible for keeping on eye on true readings?
Compare your present bills with the previous, you should be able to tell where and when it has gone pear-shaped.

    a) what were the meter readings when you moved in?
    b) what are the readings now?
    c) how many units have you paid for (i.e. what are the TOTAL estimates over all your bills so far)?

    d) if b-a is more than c, they have been under-estimating your usage and you need to eventually pay for the extra (above what you have already paid for).

Look at it another way, if your bank statement or credit card bill was based on an estimate, would you leave that 12 months before you checked it was correct?

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
