Switzerland/Austria - cheaply and independently?

Ok, so Switzerland and cheaply don't normally go together............ but can anyone help me, please?
My OH and I are thinking about going to Switzerland for our honeymoon next year. We've found a few brochures (eg Bridge, Inghams) and whilst they seem to offer good value for money, can we do it any more cheaply?
I've already tried looking on www.hotelscomparison.com, but haven't found any sort of selection of hotels that the tour operators have.
We'd like to spend a few days in Lausanne and then a week or so in one/two places in central Switzerland. Can anyone recommend a hotel that they've stayed in? We've both stayed in Interlaken, so we quite like the Bernese Oberland.
Or should we be looking at Austria?
Criteria for the whole holiday is basically lakes and mountains!
Thanks for the help in advance!

Just a quick hotel suggestion for Lausanne. I always stay at the Hotel de la Paix (4*). Highly reccommended.
Book through totalstay.com for a heavily discounted rate.5p savings box: £01.60

Well the main thing I'd say is don't bother with hotels : you're far better getting a flat. If you contact the local tourist offices, they'll send you a list which will be cheaper than any inflated prices you'll find on the web. If you're going to the Bernese Oberland, Bonigen and Grindelwald have loads available.
If you're going to the Lucerne area and want a hotel, I can recommend the Hotel Rigi in Weggis (https://www.hotelrigi.ch). It's on the basic side, and is primarily a conference centre (e.g. breakfast's available, but not evening meals). However, if you go for the pricier rooms (still only £80/night), you can get a balcony that opens straight onto the lake.
If you want a hotel in Grindelwald, can strongly recommend the Eigerblick...I booked via Octopus and actually ended up in their best room, absolutely huge, huge balcony with a view that words simply can't describe (however, I suppose you could end up with a room facing the back).I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
check out these sites for budget swiss accommodation https://www.rooms.ch https://www.bnb.ch
also look at the https://www.myswitzerland.com the tourist office site.
If travelling in Switzerland then consider buying the a Swiss Pass valid for travel on train, bus, boat and urban transport a discount is available for two people travelling together.
Its an urban myth about the prices in Switzerland there are good bargains to be had its just knowing where to look.Waddle you do eh?0 -
We went about 4 years ago, flew BA from Manchester to Zurich (Airmiles) hired a car and just set off, stopping where we fancied each evening. It was July/August when we went and we had no problems getting in anywhere. I can't really remember any names of hotels but it doesn't have to cost the earth, we got reasonable accommodation and meals without being ripped off.0
