you could zip it with AES encryption, but the receiver will need the same software to read it, as well as the password

If you want to encrypt an attachment you could use omziff
If you want to occasionally encrypt text you could use Yadabyte Shhh!!!
If you want to send encrypted emails on a regular basis take a look at http://www.djinnsplace.co.uk/thundergpg.html uses thunderbird, enigmail and gpg for further info check the link at the bottom of the page.
All the above are Freeware
