What's the input source of the video you want to capture?
Gordian Knot (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gordianknot ) or VirtualDub ( http://www.virtualdub.org/ ) are two very good free capture/convert programs, but can be a bit fiddly to useIT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer

Gknot doesn't do capture, only encoding.
Vdub's ok for capture, but there are much better apps.
It really depends on the source of the video you want to capture. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
This recent post asks your questions too. AutoScreenRecorder works for me.0
