hi all hopefully someone could help my mom is over 50 and works 25 hours a week and since this new no 10p tax band has come in she will be £2.90 per week worse off and while this is not huge it is still a loss. but looking at claiming working tax credits you have to be working for 30 hours. so does this mean that the government are not going to support this or will the working tax credits be changed to compensate the poor people who loose out?
any answers would be most gratefully recieved and i thank you in advance

There are always winners and losers in any changes to tax regimes. If people were compensated for being losers then there would be little point. Sorry.0

I think that the WTC entitlement will change to compensate for this loss, if only because lots of MP's are up in arms about poor people losing out. I think it is a case of "wait and see". Why should poor people be losers all the time?0 -
If your mother has returned to work within the last 3 months after a gap in employment of 26 weeks or more and has received a qualifying benefit (I can check these if needed) then she only needs to work 16 hours p/w to qualify for WTC - WTC will only be paid for the 1st year she is working 16-29 hours. After this she would need to work 30+ hours.
If she has not had a gap in employment then I am afraid that she needs to work 30+ hours.
It is not just those who are 50+ who are going to be worse off with the tax band changes.0 -

Should people who only work part time be classified as poor people? Surely they have the option of working full time and being rather less poor?0 -
thanks for that she has been employed for a couple of years so that wont benefit her but thank you very much for your help:Tsubsoniccoyote wrote: »If your mother has returned to work within the last 3 months after a gap in employment of 26 weeks or more and has received a qualifying benefit (I can check these if needed) then she only needs to work 16 hours p/w to qualify for WTC - WTC will only be paid for the 1st year she is working 16-29 hours. i was not saying she was poor money wise i meant poor as in unfortunate!and i think after working full time from the day she left school entitles her to doing a few less hours than full time-and the fact she has found a job to fit in with my son finishing school which i am most grateful for now means she is nealy £300 a year worse off thanks to a labour government!Oldernotwiser wrote: »Should people who only work part time be classified as poor people? Perhaps you could show your gratitude by paying her for the childcare she does? Otherwise it seems to me that any top up benefits available to her would be subsidising you and not her.
I'm probably around your mother's age and I don't see any reason for someone in our position to be subsidised by the taxpayer to work fewer than full time hours. We're all supposed to be working for a greater number of years nowadays, not fewer.0 -
thanks for your very useful comments, firstly my mom does not want paying by me as i am on minimum wage as it is with a mortgage and i am a single parent, and secondly she does not want to be subsidised by any one-she didnt ask mr gordon brown to take money off her every week she was quite happy with what she earns and the hours she does it was me who suggested working tax she does not like to claim anything she has always supported herself and will carry on doing so but with all household bills going up and now her wages going down it going to get harder-maybe we should all go and do some more hours to line the nice politicians pockets and have no life!!!!:mad:Oldernotwiser wrote: »Perhaps you could show your gratitude by paying her for the childcare she does?
