BT Contract

Sorry this is my first post but I need some advice.
Last year we were with bt and they called, my wife took the call and they said would we like free evening and weekend calls cost £1.50 she said ok sounds good.
Our direct debit was increased another £10 per month ?
We decided to go with Tiscali we have broadband with them so we swapped over for free line rental and calls package.
We are then sent a letter from bt with a charge of £78 for the calls package mentioned above, they said we were in a contract.
A contract was never mentioned in any calls or in the only letter we received, we have signed nothing.
I have just been on the phone to them as when we called before Christmas it seemed like it was all going to be sorted out. Now they say we must pay (the money is not an issue). now they say if we don't the debit will be passed on.
I still can't see why we should pay. If i enter a contract I want to sign a piece of paper.
Is there any rout left or should I cower down in the corner and empty my pockets

Who is the BT account holder?
If it is not your wife they should not have taken any notice of you wife.
Data protection and all that.
But only when it suit's.0 -

As long as you quote the BT account number, as that is only available to letters addressed to the account holder, orders can be placed for disconnection or contracts for new packages. Only personal things like itemisation on telephone bills or discussion of calls made on the account, or changing direct debits or addresses for bills to be sent to cannot (shouldn't) be done by the customer's agent.0

Well we have decided to pay and never agree to anything on the phone. Bt are thugs and extortionists.0

Bit hefty for thugs & extortionists? Surely as a consumer you should ensure you're familiar with terms & conditions? I'm all for consumer protection but half the problem is consumers accepting some for of responsibility on their side.0 -
If you think BT Customer Service is bad wait till you experience Tiscali ,together with their rip off 0871 10p a minute customer service number.0
