Maybe worth checking the M/B manufacturer's site to see if there's an updated BIOS. Sometimes needed with newer chip architectures etc.

And turbobob's advice applies equally well when flashing an update to the BIOS.

I can't see what you could do with a Dual Core Extreme which you can't do with your current Dual Core 2 2.4 (in real terms)

A friend of mine throws money at his PC, the upgrades are based on Benchmark results from 3D Mark.
If someone online has a better score, it is time to upgrade!

The fact that all his games run flat out at max settings seem almost secondary to his desire to upgrade.

If I have spare money to upgrade I look differently at it. If the PC runs everything I need to my liking and I have enough space, I buy a bigger monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.

Unless you're gaming or doing a lot of realtime video editing, there's no point.

If you have e6600 these are very overclockable.
    I have e2180 and 60 quid m/b runs at 3.2 ok - bit flakey at 3.4!
I have mem from scan ddr800 - less than 12 quid a GB.
Gigabyte G31 and P31 boards only 40 quid or so will o/c well
Extreme edition cpu cost 500-600? Get e8400 and p5k mobo - 200+ but may do 4Ghz.
Conor does have a very valid point!!!

I had an E6300 previously. I had that overclocked from 1.86Ghz to 2.93Ghz. I was able to undervolt it to keep temps lower. My brother has that pc now.

It worked great, just make sure you have a decent heatsink/fan, and not the stock. I was running a Scythe Ninja which was to be honest too big. Absolute beast it was.

I've now got a Q6600 which overclock well too. I've got it at 3.2Ghz up from 2.4Ghz. I blogged about it here:

I wouldn't bother with an Extreme version. For your money you're much better off getting a Q6600 or Q9xxx (if you're looking for a quad core).

Or the E8300/8400 both overclock very well for dual cores.
