email address problem

I am having trouble with my ISP over my email address apparently I have to pay for the domain they have registered, (it is a long story, I thought it was free when I started with them 2 years ago), it is due for renewal next month and it is far too much money, problem is my wife uses the address on a lot of her business stationary etc.
someone suggested www.123-reg.co.uk, which is much cheaper, but I can't find on their site how to register the same email address,
can I register it while my ISP still have it , or do I have to give it up first?
all I want to do is use it on outlook express, and is it easy to change that part of it?
Hope the above makes sense, basically I want to keep my old email address but not pay as much for it.
thanks

How much is your ISP asking to renew the domain?
Are you sure they are not bundling in the hosting with the price?
If you want to tranfer your domain I'd advise moving your hosting as well to avoid complications.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think it goes something like this:
If your Domain renewal is up, you need to renew it unless you plan to transfer it to a different hosting package. If you want to transfer it then your new host should be able to manage the transfer, but you may incur charges to do the transfer. You will still need to renew it but it may be cheaper with a different host. What is the domain? .co.uk? .com?
If you do not renew the domain then it will (eventually) go back on the market for someone else to register, and your wife's emails will stop working in the mean time.
I am assuming that your ISP host both the website and the domain?
I wouldn't advise having hosting in one place and a domain in the other unless you know what you're doing. It's better to have it all in one place.
It sounds like your ISP offered you a free domain when you signed up. But domains have to be paid for (usually every 2 years but you can choose) so they are unlikely to keep paying for it. Is the hosting they provide also free?
If you plan to move I can recommend heart-internet.co.uk. Free hosting and they will manage the transfer of your domain.
Just make sure you either renew or transfer BEFORE your domain runs out!
Hope this helps.- Google is your friend, use it :rolleyes:0 -
this is what I am expected to pay!
Renewal of **********.co.uk for 2yrs May 26 2008 £19.99
EconoMail for ********.co.uk for 1yr May 26 2008 £14.99
NET AMOUNT £34.98
VAT £6.12
TOTAL DUE £41.10
For various reasons I want to keep the email address that we have been using for the last 2 years, looking at the www.123-reg.co.uk FAQ I think I can ask my ISP to change the tag etc. and transfer to them which works out about £10.68 not sure about VAT.
I need to ring my ISP to see what the price is to keep just the email address going as I don't understand the above pricing.
I don't understand what hosting means neither.
Basically just want to keep my old email address as cheaply as possible.no debts0 -
There are different ways to do it.
Find out if you own the domain or if the hosting company bought it on your behalf and actually owns the name
The supplier of the domain should give up the domain you registered with them if you don't want to carry on with them. It seems they own the domain that they bought on your behalf & some of them keep them afterwards for 3 months to make sure you register with them again. The price seems steep.
Always register a domain name yourself to make sure you own the name and not the host you bought it off. I buy domains at lycos.co.uk and they are 1.99 for a year ( .co.uk) . I get the ownership papers sent to me by icann
Then use someone like https://www.3ix.com to host ( 60p a month). You will get some e-mails addresses with that as well. Then if you get fed up, you own the domain and can move the hosting with ease.
You can buy the domain and then use googlemail and set it up with your own
mail@ ****.co.uk for free , so you won't need to have a websiteNudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
If you let me know what the domain is I can do a whois is on it to see if it's actually registered in your name or not.

You need to renew the domain hosting (2 years is the minimum for .co.uk) and you need an email account with whoever you choose. You can renew the domain and transfer it with any domain provider BEFORE it runs out. Your present host will have to release it to your new host (strict rules govern this) unless you owe any money to your present host.
I'd think somewhere between £14.00 and £20.00 about right. Hosts usually charge £5-£10.00 per domain (for 2 years) and usually and extra £10 a year for basic email.0 -
thanks everyone for replies, I have contacted my ISP and got the price down to £20.54 but I think I will have the same hassle in 1 to 2 years time.
I have reread the posts a few times and I am still not 100% sure if I understand completely.
As I said I would like to keep the same email address to use on outlook express,( be able to read emails from other computers would be good but not essential)
can someone go through the procedure steps to set it up somewhere else, where I would have more control over it, and at a more reasonable price?
I have copied below this from my ISP control box I am not sure at what stage I would have to do this.
Change Nominet Tag
Only change the TAG for this domain if you wish to pass administrative control to another provider. Once you change the TAG, the new provider will charge you for the renewal of the domain. This transfer procedure will incur a one-off fee of £10.00+VAT to cover our administration costs. Please allow 1-2 days for the changes to take effect.

thehost makes your website available to the web, with the right equipment you can host the site yourself, the host normally includes some e-mail space that you can use so you can have whateveryouwanttocallyourself@whateverthedomainis . The domain is just the name. Owning the domain does not mean it is automatically hosted.
Your e-mail address will be the same but it will be hosted elswhere if you choose to change.
Your current e-mail is available as webmail & excessable from any pc (almost all are) but you have chosen to use outlook to manage your mail on your home pc, this will be the same except a pop3 setting change, (smtp will be the same - your isp) which will be given to by the new provider/host but you may lose a couple of days as the change over happens.
£10 admin costs !!!!!
I have domain at 1.99 yr from lycos, with upto 20 e-mail addreses
( whateveriwant@mydomain )
for less than £8 year with 3ix
If you are going to do it then do it b4 the time is up. e-mail your new domain name seller if they can sort it out and make sure you own the name personallyNudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
okay I have been onto the lycos site, £1.99 + vat to get our domain, noticed that there was 4 steps through to payment, after that what is the next stage?
