Filezilla FTP queries

Hi,

The first thing to say is I'm extremely untechie! Right, that said....

Please can anyone offer advice on the following:

I do some work from home which involves downloading audio files (in various formats, wma, dss, mp3 etc).

I've been given a link to a program called Filezilla, where I have been given a log in and password and this hooks me up, presumably, to someone else's website where I go to download the audio files from.

I would like to set up my own facility with Filezilla but for people to be able to upload their files to me directly for me to download.

Is anyone familiar with Filezilla and able to say if I can do this? Or is there any better/easier way to set this sort of facility up?

At the moment I have some files sent to me via Yousendit and Skype but to be more professional I'd like to be able to offer a facility where people can upload files directly. This would also not inconvenience people who don't have Yousendit or Skype accounts.

Do I need to first set up a website to do this or a server (not really sure what a server is... !) Or can I just set up filezilla in such a way that people can access it to upload to me and I receive an email to tell me whan a file has been uploaded?

Hope some of you techies out there can offer some tips.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards

Filezilla is an FTP client and an FTP server. Presumably, you are using the FTP client. It lets you connect to an FTP server and upload/download files. An FTP server is a computer somewhere on the internet which allows access to certain files/folders using FTP (File Transfer Protocol - a type of file transfer).

You might be able to give people access to your free web space (check with your ISP). They could then use Filezilla or any other ftp program to upload/download files.

You could set up your router to allow FTP access to a PC on your network, leave it on 24/7 and give people access to it. This is risky, especially if you are not sure what you are doing.

The best way would be to get your company to set up an FTP server for you. Most companies have servers with connection to the internet which are left on 24/7.

You can setup an ftp server to do it no bother, yep.

google for "free windows ftp server" without quotes and see what one takes your fancy. I use ioFTPD but it doesn't have a gui so I wouldn't recommend it to any untechie types. :D

You'll probably also have to setup some kind of dynamic DNS redirector like dyndns.com since your ip will probably change, and people won't be able to connect.

One thing you could use instead of FTP is a nice app called HFS. It'll give them a web interface on your pc to upload with.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
