Rescue dog has dandruff.... any ideas on getting rid

Hi all..... I was wondering if anybody out there could possibly help. I rescue pets that nobody can look after any more for whatever reason and yesterday I took in a lurcher/collie cross. I noticed this morning that he has dandruff. I bathed him in dog shampoo but still bad dandruff. Does anybody out there have any ideas on how to get rid of it?
On the same note found out my 6 yr old GSD/Border collie x is not exactly straight lol he keeps on trying to mount the rescue dog, which turns out in a full scale growling match. Guess my dog is going to be losing his bits pretty soon curteousy of the vet ...... (Apart from the attempted mounting problem they get on great together)

One of my dogs occasionally suffers from dandruff - we usually use a generic dog shampoo from the vet, and it clears up. However, if it's not shifting or there's lots of it, I'd recommend speaking to the vet in case it's more of a serious dermatological problem - especially with having another dog in the house.
As for the mounting - be prepared that it may not stop with the loss of the bits! My female dog mounts other dogs (male, female, she's not picky) and the cats as a dominance thing. It's quite funny when she "rides" the puppy across the room though."outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. inside of a dog, it's too dark to read" - Groucho Marx0 -
Get him onto a decent food, and maybe add some sardines or pilchards to his diet first. If it persists you'll want to get the vet to check him out for anything more serious.
Castration usually helps with humping, but not always, especially if it primarily dominance rather than sexual in origin. Even if the castration does help it won't be instant and will take anything from weeks to months to have an effect. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
Ok thanks, it was just a spare of the moment thought about the castration part as my dog had me awake till 5am whining to get to the other dog, but I will see what the vet says anyway, plus I will see what the rescue centres that i deal with have to suggest.
I don't know what they were feeding the poor lad on but he doesn't half let off some silent but deadly ones and stinks the house out. I am feeding him James wellbeoved with a l;ittle bit of tinned food as my dog won't eat dry stuff on it's own, but the dry stuff outweighs the wet.
Anyway thanks for all your helpQue Sera Sera & C'est la vie :A0 -
I agree with the odd tin of sardines or pilchards, or some evening primrose or cod liver oil sprinkled onto the dogs ordinary food. My dog was a bit dandruffy when I got her, but an improved diet has helped.
I also found wilkos pupy/sensitive dog shampoo and conditioner in one, with aloe vera, really helped a lot, and seems very gentle (i get dermatitis on my hands, and it doesnt flare my skin up when I wash the dog in this, so it must be ok!!!)0 -
Hi there
When my rescue cat suffered from what looked like dandruff the vet said that it was an allergy to flea bites - it may be worth asking the vets for some allergy testing.
Treating the fleas with frontline cured the dandruff although it took about a month to disappear.
Just a thought.......
