Thanks guys, the bread was ok just a bit dense but I blame Lidl's rubbush bread mix, it told me to bake it as gas mark 3 (I didn't, I noticed it said 240)
However I have a new bread question!
I have just made dough but got rather distracted and forgot what I was doing. I have just put flour, water and yeast in with a dash of olive oil. Will it make bread? I had dough improver but forgot to add it, also I think there should be more ingredients?June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I'm not surprised it was a bit dense if you only used 250g of water to 500g of mix. I normally use about 60% of the flour weight of water (if you see what I mean) Perhaps you could try a bit more water next time?0_o0 -
Hi there
I'll add this to the existing handmade bread thread to keep ideas together.

Thanks for moving my post, I looked though indexed posts but couldn't find a hand baking one.
Made a third loaf yesterday, came out really well tho I over cooked it! However it still didn't taste that nice ( I put sugar and salt in but no fat/oil). It's fine as toast but I want that rich, yummy bread taste that makes you want to eat the whole loaf!
Will try the recipe thriftlady posted but it seems exactly the same as the one I did yesterday. Forgot to add the dough improver I bought, will that affect the flavour or is it just to help it rise? Should I add milk powder?
Thankyou!June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I've got another question for all you bready experts out there! - I've been making Thriftlady's loaf recipe (1lb white flour and half a lb wholemeal) which has been turning out really well, only thing is the crust is really thick and chewy, is there any way of reducing it a little bit? Tastes lovely but is a bit of work to get through!0

Hi everyone!
A young moneysaver here, wanting tips on a traditional money saving idea! My mum and dad are feeling the bite of the credit crunch at the moment and being someone who quite enjoys cooking/baking I was thinking I could bake our own bread. We go through about 4 loaves a week so it costs quite a bit every week.
1) firstly, would it save us a considerable amount of money for me to bake our bread?
2) and how do i do it?! What ingredients do i need (and step by step recipes would be greatly appreciated).
I would like to make a white loaf and a brown loaf so tips on either would be great. THank you so much in advance on helping me help my parents!

There is loads of good info on the board try the "artisan bread" thread.
If you go to Asda they have Hovis white and brown bread mix packets for 27p each, which would possibly be the easy cost effective way to start.0 -
Hi Vicky  Do you have a bread maker or will you be baking by hand? Just asking so that I can point you to the correct thread

THank you for helping Penny! I will be baking by hand. Do I need specific tins to put it in?Money Saved for a house deposit so far = July 2008 £3331.09, August £4396.40, September £5,048.37 (Target = £9,000 by July 2009) 56% there already!:j
