car insurance refusing to cover me after paid

hey all, im new to this site but i was after some advise,

i recently took out some insurance with morethan.
it is cover for myself and my dad under my dads name. my dad has paid for it and even recieved the certificate with both our names on it.

but now, they called me up and said they refused to cover me (dad is fine), even thought we already have the certificate and have paid for it.

is this allowed?

It might well be that they have feelyour policy is a 'cover up' for you driving the car but putting it in your dads name to make it cheaper... Have you had insurance with them before? What type of car is it? Did you do it online?

I'm sure I read something on here about companies clamping down on that sort of thing, apologies if I've jumped the gun a bit here!

I think it depends on the reasons they give you for revoking the agreed policy terms - do they think you were less than honest with your answers? Do they think you are the main user when you put yourself down as a second driver?

They base their risk on the answers we give, and we are bound by law to give honest answers, otherwise they can revoke the policy.

Are they happy to refund you and cancel the policy as it is no longer what you wanted to buy?

Better to find out now than when you had to make a claim!

Not sure if this is a similar situation to yours (you'll need to elaborate a bit!) but Churchill refused cover on mine when I received the certificate and called to say that they'd noted the wrong trim for my car.

They had a Honda CRX VTI Del Sol
I needed a Honda CRX VXI Del Sol

After a couple of minutes on hold, they told me I was too young to be insured for the different trim! :rotfl: So I had to find some new insurance quick, before I could drive back to work...

Yes, it is allowed. If you insist on covering both drivers, the insurer will exercise the general condition on cancellation.

This will set out exactly what rights of cancellation the policyholder as and also what rights of cancellation the insurer has.

Generally the insurer can cancel without having to give a reason, they only have to send 7 or 14 days notice of cancellation in writing to your last known address. They will also usually refund premiums paid on a pro-rata basis unless a claim has been incurred.

Edited to add: Here is the MORE TH>N wording:

"We may cancel this policy if we send you a letter giving you 7 days’ notice, to your last known address. You
must then return the Certificate of Motor Insurance to us. We will refund the appropriate proportion of your
premium, worked out from the date we receive your Certificate of Motor Insurance."

    (From http://www.morethan.com/Process/Documents/motorpoli.pdf )

Often in cases where cover is declined after recently being set up it is due to the insurer findiing undisclosed claims on a database called CUE or calling a previous insurer to confirm NCD and discovering some new information.
  • hi all, thanks for the replies,
it is to make it cheaper for myself altho as i am at uni, i am not at home for like 2/3 or the year anyway so wouldnt be able to drive it. it is a corsa and i did buy online.

i had the insurance with them last year and didnt have a problem. they did send me a renewal but the renewal was like £100 more than last yr so i decided to quote them on the website which came to be cheaper so i just bought that.

i guess i just gotta wait and see what they do then, cos they sed they would contact the writer and call me back letting me know the decision. i just hoped that there would be some law or something which says as ive got the certificate they HAD to cover me lol, nevermind!

    thanks again

That's illegal (fronting) and they were right to cancel your policy.

  • lol sorry let me rephrase, basically me and my dad both need to use the car. he is the main driver and im second driver. he uses the car more than me as he uses it everyday, i use it like once or twice during the hols when i come home.
i ment its cheaper that buying as me on main driver (which im not) but racking up some NCB under my name.

On a positive note for insurers, I did a search through Confused, got the best quote and then went through Quidco straight to the site (that shall remain nameless) to buy the policy.

This was a few days later, so imagine my surprise when the policy turned out to be about £75 cheaper than I was expecting...

After sending us all the Certificate and Policy stuff, we got a letter about a month later saying that we had been charged the wrong amount due to an error, but they have honoured the price we paid and are continuing with the policy!

You cant do what you did as you werent a new customer, by claiming to be online you supplied false information and breached any contract letting them do what they want in reason

Im also not convinced your not fronting

Sounds like the insurers have realised your a scammer
