Wrong reference on bank transfer...now no one will help me!!

Hey ppl,

I don't know whether this is the right section but here is goes...

I recently sent a payment transfer of £400 from my alliance leicester current account to pay my lloyds tsb credit card.

But I put in the wrong reference number and the money has gone out of my current account but not into my lloyds tsb credit card account.

I have spoke to alliance leicester and they say I have got to speak to lloyds tsb as they think it will be in there holding account.

I speak to lloyds tsb and they say they cant find the payment in there holding account, i need to speak to alliance leicester and get them to trace it.

alliance leicester are saying they wont be able to trace it, because i made the transfer online and it was my mistake, they wont do anything about it.

I must say alliance leicester customer services stinks!!!

anyway does anybody have any ideas? i need help

thanks in advance
Luke

Write to both institutions, but I think it'll be up to LTSB to send the money back...not for A&L to chase it on your behalf. Hopefully, the 16 digit card number you used doesn't exist (and your money lies in a suspense account), otherwise we might have another one of those "someone paid £400 off my credit card...do I have to give it back" posts from a newbie!

In future, whenever you get a new account, always send a test payment (say, £1) to test the conduit & time the transfer, and then save it to your payee list. That way, you can guarantee you won't make the same mistake again.

If you don't read the payment instructions ..... and just send £400 off into the void without a clue as to what it's for - why expect sense out of the Banks? When you haven't displayed any.

The money can't be allocated .... so it will be sitting in a suspense account at Lloyds TSB (assuming, of course, you completed the Sort Code correctly?). They will turn that back towards A&L automatically after about 10 days (does depend on work load). But you could expedite it by ringing your CC contact number and telling them where the money is. They should be able to route it on to your Credit Card account ..... or hasten the return to your A&L account if you've paid by different means in the interim?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

A few months back i sent a credit card payment from my lloyds tsb account to bank of scotland instead of royal bank of scotland. I had to visit a royal bank of scotland branch give them the date of transfer and the amount and they sent the money back to my account after a few days.

Not sure about any other bank but rbs did it without a fuss and the lady did mention it was a common mistake!
