IE has encountered a problem and needs to close message

Im having a bit of a problem with my laptop which I’m hoping you can solve.
The problem started about 6 months ago, occasionally when I was on the internet a window would pop up saying something along the lines of ‘‘Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, please tell Microsoft about this problem. Then there’s a bit that says send or don’t send report. The box also contains a bit where you can see the data this error report contains, error signature, reporting details, and technical info’’ all of which means nothing to me
The original problem occurred when trying to access British Gas site and Delia Smith recipe sites. Somedays it would be OK but for most of the times the site would not be available to me. Now this message is appearing more and more, weather sites eg weather underground, the Kodak photo sharing and Photobucket are the most recent. It’s driving me to distraction.
I’ve not installed any new programs as far as I know, my firewall, antivirus etc are upto date. Although I did try to reinstall Adware but got the same message and so installed Spybot instead.
Please can someone give me a clue as to what might be wrong and how to fix it (if it’s very simple) or do I need to take it to an ‘expert’ to fix rather than tinker myself
I’ve not got broadband and normal speeds in Spain (where i live) do seem quite slow. Please let me know if I need to supply more info.

Try using Firefox (free download) and see if its makes any difference
  • Its probably one of the IE addons thats causing the problem. Try updating flash and java, also remove any toolbars you may have.

Goto start, run and type in eventvwr and press ok. Check the application logs for anything that refers to iexplore.exe and copy and paste what it says here.

ok, I tried to get into Kodakgallery.co.uk and got the usual IE has encountered a problem etc, so then went to events as shown below
    Event viewer local
    In applications
Type error date 11042008 time 13.54 source application error category none event1001 user n/a computer sandy com
2nd error the same but event 1000
    in security
type failure audit date 11/04/2008 time 1338 source security category priviledge event 576 user network server computer sandy com

internet explore there are no items to show in this view
can’t see anything that says iexplore.exe

The only toolbar I've got is Yahoo and have just removed that, but it didn't make a difference, still got the same old message, see prev post.
How do I update java and flash please

I'm not very bright with computers I'm afraid, I just want it to be like a car, you switch on and off it goes merrily. Any instructions will need to be almost in words of one syllable....sorry

The are 3 tabs in eventvwr, you are looking at the security log, open the one that says application.

    Ok I’ve done it again
Blue bit at the top says Event viewer, under that it has headings File action view help
Under that is another strip which has arrow pointing backwards, arrow pointing forwards, a little icon that looks a bit like a book, then a sort of bullet point icon with an arrow pointing forwards, then finally a page with a question mark on it

Below these there isa list Application, security, system and Internet explorer

If I click on internet explorer, log, custom log error records, there is nothing listed

right done that but there's still nothing that says iexplore.exe

There is a longlist of stuff but I quoted the bit that came up last lime I tried the Kodak site
Type error, date 11042008, time 13.54, source application error, category none, event1001 , user n/a , computer sandy com
2nd error the same but event 1000

I'm trying to update java set up as previously suggested, laptop is installing it but it just seems to be 'hanging' with no progress on the line that's supposed to show how quickly things are progressing, it'll take hours at this rate as I haven't got broadband
