advice please: Im selling and free holder (local council) wants £100 + VAT.....

to answer my solicitors questions!!! Whats all that about?

So to fill u in Im selling my leasehold flat at the mo and got a letter yesterday from my solicitor saying they have some questions about my property that the free holder has to answer ( there the local council) and they have attached the letter the council wrote back saying they charge a fee (£100 + VAT) for "providing response to standard pre-assignment/remortgage enquiries"

Im finding this ludicrious!! Is this right? Im getting really stressed especially at moment Im giving money away hand over fist with a purchase also.

Your views would be appreciated.

    Yes - it's common for the Freeholder to charge, especially if they're a management company or the Council.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

    well i think its an absolute p##s take!! £100 just to answer some questions that I bet are very straight forward. I think it should be the buyer of my property who sho pay anyway!!

    No hard and fast rules as to who should pay - no reason why you shouldn't tell your buyer to pay.

  • £100 + vat is a typical amount that landlords/managing agents charge for this information - I've encountered some in London who charge nearer £300.

    It is normal for the seller to pay and your solcitors should have told you to expect to pay such a fee when they sent you their estimate - although they might not have known the amount.

    thankls alot. All sorted now but had some arguments with solicitors and landlord over who was supposed to sort it out - solicitors said I had to do it, landlord said the solicitors had to do it!! Ive had it with my solicitors!!!!
