I prefer Honda's to Fords. Ford servicing is cheaper than Honda.

The Honda 1.7 CTDI does about 450 miles on a full tank, tanks holds 40L I have heard. Anyone know what the Ford Focus does?

I'd have the Focus any day. I know they are common as muck but they are reasonable cheap to fix and cheap to insure. I have driven both the Honda and the Ford as my company runs them as pool cars - basically, the Honda feels like a quality product but the used prices reflect it. The Ford on the other hand is a much more entertainign drive ... its quicker, handles better, and doesnt feel as claustraphobic inside as the Honda ....

.... also, in 5 door form, the Honda looks NASTY!

I know that Hondas are meant to be ultra-reliable but based on the pool car situation here, the Focus has proved more relibale. Recent survey reports (Which) back this up even though I never take those reports as gospel.

I think that comment needs to be clarified. Fords are more reliable, than they used to be. A modern Ford is a very good reliable car, but the Honda (in common with almost all Japanese cars) is a higher level still. Ford have a controlling interest in Mazda, and their engines are largely developed by Yamaha (Zetec), so in recent years their cars have become almost as good as Japanese ones.

At the end of the day both cars are near the top of their class in most areas and neither should disappoint.

Edging towards Honda Civic, only problems is the gear stick is mounted high on the dash that may put me off.
