Thanks Lowis, I had a feeling he was trying his luck a bit. On a positive note, he gave us a 12 month prescription, so shouldn't have to pay any more consultation fees for that particular issue for another year at least.
My sister's vet had no problems doing this, and even faxed it off for her. I feel a strongly worded letter coming on......!
  • Some vets charge a "decision making fee". They use their clinical knowledge and time to decide from a recent history if your animal is well enough to be allowed medication.

£10 is about average - considering, vets time, nurses time, receptionists time, all the equipment required to have your notes logged and to have made a clinical examination in the first place (rough p/h costs vet £20-30, nurse £8-10, reception £8-10, £££££££ for having practice).

A 12 month prescriptin is good, so don't waste money on any of the non-prescritpion stuff, unless its Frontline it doesn't work, so not very MSE.

    Total so far £28

I think the *decision making fee* is usually called a consultation fee......and I wish it was only a tenner! and except in very difficult cases it should only take minutes to issue a prescription especially for routine stuff like flea and wormer treatments, quick look at computerised records, fill in template, click print and then sign!!

Until the end of October vets are NOT allowed to charge a prescription fee, after that I imagine most will......

What they are allowed to do(and are required to ) is to have the animal under their care so most vets will insist you bring the animal in regularly for a consultation usually every 3 -6 months before they will issue a prescription which is fair enough.

A fee charged for dispensing or prescribing meds should not be charged at the moment IMO but they may be able to get round that if they claim that every customer pays it, not just people who are buying elsewhere.

Get that strongly worded letter written and please let us know the response:D
