40k to invest today over long term, your thoughts

nobody has a crystal ball but I feel that 2008, 2009 are gonna be bad years to invest. I mean share prices have already been dropping a load and I personnally think its going to continue. I may just keep the money in high interest savings accounts and wait it out until all the talk isn't about global slowdown and bear stearns/northern rock going down the tube and sub-prime mortgage disaster etc.
