mmmm ...well as this is a moneysaving site....Im not so keen on that (though its probably the right way to do things) as I believe that bt's minimum charge for doing this simple job is £180.
maybe I'll try to get a local electrician to do it, if I am not brave enough to tackle it myself.

Technically it's illegal to tamper with anything on the BT side - the two wires that come in from the street to the master socket. Anything on the consumer side is fine, past the master socket (and on the master socket consumer connections), you can do whatever you like with.
If you know basic electrics you'll be fine, you can't get a shock from it (and for those pedants here, certainly not of any serious magnitude) it isn't mains electric, nor is it in any way related to the mains supply.
A local electrician cannot legally touch the BT side, and best not to ask one in the first place.
You don't need a third wire connected, it's from a ring circuit, used for older style telephones, nowadays it causes more problems, acting like an aerial to potentially cause interference with ADSL etc.0
