problem with HP printer

I have the hpf380 which uses the hp21 black & hp22 colour. I installed the hp58 photo cartridge which goes in the slot where the hp21 is. Cartridges have to be inserted after switching on, after which it does a test print, then it's ready. When I now insert cartridges, it no longer does the test print.

Not sure if this is relevant, but are they 'proper' hp cartridges? When I bought the 'compatible' cartridges from Tesco, printer did not work. We went though hundreds of troubleshooting routines but when we put in HP cartridges it worked perfectly first time.

Do you need the test print.
Does the printer print for you?

If it is still under warranty take it back for a repair although printers are now so cheap you may get a new one.

(I did when my Epson developed a fault after 11 months - got a new one as it was cheaper than investigating what was causing the paper jam)

look at the contacts to see if they are dirty. If that doesn't work try fixyourownprinter.com - super forums with very helpful people.
