Is my freezer dying?

Hi all!
I hope someone knows about these things. I have a small-ish chest freezer, it's about 8 years old. Recently it has got a lot noisier, it emits a sort of high-pitched buzz constantly, although it stops for a second or two when it's opened (or when I kick it in frustration).
Now I'm aware that nobody here is a mindreader, but is there anything obvious that could be making the noise? There doesn't seem to be any problem with it actually freezing yet, but it is full and I'm worried about it suddenly dropping out. Also I'd rather fix it before it reaches the point of no return, I don't like buying new stuff if I can help it.
So... any ideas?

OH seems to think it is either your cooling fan next to the compressor (the black thing on the side of machine) or the compressor itself. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Or, if there's no cooling fan it's likely the compressor. It is unusual to have a cooling fan on a small chest.
The compressor is the only other moving part on most bar any cooling fan.
