TBH if you are not willing to take any kind of work, even just for a few months, then you can't need the money that much?Gone ... or have I?0

Well, I have a roof over my head, I will be fed and clothed and I was prudent enough to put some money aside over the last couple of years so I suppose I don't 'need' the money.
I think I am just shocked to have come out of the other side of this and realised that we didn't have any of the protection of a normal job in terms of sick pay, maternity rights or even the minimum wage for some of our work (probably a story for another day), and now to find out that as far as my NI record goes I have less contributions than someone on a vocational training course. Hardly does wonders for the old confidence knowing that in this 'knowledge based economy' we are supposedly building, the next generation of 'knowledge builders' (particularly women) are bailing out because of the lack of security and reliability of funding and jobs.
krisskross you are right about the Jobcentre, it's a bit grim (especially if they won't give you any money  ) cheers for all the input folks0
