Newborn Sleeping

I found that trying to follow a strict routine made my PND worse.
Me too. Actually I didn't get PND, but the only time I cried (because I was soooo knackered) was after about 5 days following Gina Ford's routine. It was a silly idea since we were quite happy and doing well (I just felt I should be in a 'routine' quickly), but forcing her to be up and dressed by 7 was pointless and made us both very tired and thus unhappy.
That crying moment was the turning point of taking the book to the charity shop.It did offer me one good piece of advice though (none of my friends had babies so they were an unknown yet very natural thing to me) which is that a newborn baby shouldn't spend more than 2 hours awake at any given time. Actually I have noticed that most can't even manage an hour.

thanks for all the replies. would love a routine but am useless at it. don't mind that he sleeps in the day, but would just love him to sleep better at night. definitely going to try anf make baby realise difference between day and night and take up after a late feed. Thought i had done really well last night and that baby slept through for a few hours, until OH told me that he got him out of the cot and i fed him and then OH put him back - that just shows how tired i am! I suppose it seems that everyone does what suits them and their lifestyle best - my son who is nearly 5 is terrible at going to bed and sleeping in his own bed so i suppose i am trying not to make the same mistakes again. i suffer with depression too and i think a routine would make it easier for me to cope as i would to some extent know what is happenign when and when i would have time to get things done.
Does anybody have an opinion on gro bags - was going to buy a proper Gro bag for about £17 but OH says that i should buy a cheaper version - are these as good and correctly togged?now mum of 4!!!0 -

Hi 3kidsnomoney,
We have used Aptimal with DS and have had no problems. I seem to recall some discussions on MSE Parent Club re SMA Gold and people having problems with it.
Re sleeping, just be grateful as DS hardly ever slept either during day or night when first born and how I wish he had... even now only tends to nap for half hour at a time... so make the most of it. Read something by Miriam Stoppard saying the more babies sleep in the day, the more they sleep at night, but never found out if that was the case.Mum to 2 lovely boys who keep me busy.0
