Just Agreed to a 12 Month BT Contract ! Did I do the right thing ?

I just signed up for BTs Anytime plan for 12 months. Have I done the right thing ?

Here's the lowdown:
  • I use the phone mostly at evenings but now want daytime calls too
  • I want Caller ID
  • I want an answerphone (BTs 1571 has been fine for us so far)
  • I don't want to mess about with prefixes/CPS. Trying to convince my household to remember to enter these numbers just doesn't work and a dialling box looks ugly as it hangs off the wall.
BT are still running the £10.50 for 3 months then £16.45 (£10.50 + £5.95) for the months after this. This works out at £179.55 for the year which is slightly better than the current deal on their website for Anytime which is £15.45 for 12 months (£10.50 + £5.95) which works out at £185.40 for the year

Looking at the other options, for ease of use BT seemed to come out better to me.

I take it friends and family will not be ringing you?

If so the use of 1571 cost them wasted money.

You can do it cheaper than BT depending oh how many calls you make.

For daytime calls using 18185 is a fixed 5p per call to national rate numbers for as long as you like .

It'll cost them if I have a normal answerphone or the BT one won't it ?
Some companies are charging extra to have an answerphone service whereas BT include it in their price plan.

    You have missed the point.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Thanks for the link.
Most of my incoming calls are in the evening and I would hope that most callers have a free evening and weekend calls package by now.

We aren't talking about a great deal of savings to be had by 18185 for the calls that we make so I think BT's deal is ok for now. I have to factor in the prefix dialing inconvenience.

Heinz - can I opt out of the BT 1571 service even though I am on their Anytime plan ? I wouldn't mind a proper answerphone as per your link.
