Hi I am pretty handy and so my friend's wife has asked me to build them a chicken run. She says the chickens will live in the shed but she wants a run built to the full height of the shed for them so I have loads of questions, ie,
Can you use treated timber i.e. is it ok for the chickens?
What size timber do you think I would need?
What mesh should I use, I know there is chicken wire but isn't that a bit weak and flimsy and maybe too easy for foxes to bite through?
Should it have a floor or is it better that they can go on the ground (my friends are beginners with chickens by the way so don't say ask them)?
Should it have a mesh roof or a waterproof roof, I know what I would pick but wondered if there was reasons that it should be one or the other?
How should I fix it to the ground, what's the best way?
Any help/tips appreciated.

Have a look at the forums on https://www.practicalpoultry.co.uk
There's a board on there dedicated to housing including runs.
We don't have chickens but we're goignt o get some soon and I'll be building a house and run. From memory tanalised wood is fine. Otherwise if it's untreated make sure you use a water based treatment on it.
1/2 inch weldmesh is what most people seem to use. Apparently this company are a good, cheap supplier.
Funnily enough I've spent part of the morning speccing up materials and designs for our hen house.
I think runs have to be covered to prevent wild bird droppings falling in as that could transmit avian flu although there still seem to be plenty for sale with mesh instead. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
When i built our chicken run, i used chicken wire, but around the edge put paving slabs (just cheap broken ones from the reclamation yard) so that foxes couldnt dig their way underneath.0
