MSE_Martin wrote:Personally i think he's one of the best, approachable, chirpy, explanatory. It's a difficult subject to get across and he does it well in my view.
I've been on programmes with him a couple of times (proof we're not the same person) and i find him very good (totally different subject area to me, and one i don't know huge amounts about so its interesting to listen). Also as an ex-Institute of Fiscal Studies man (i think), he must seriously know his stuff!
What I'd like to know is why he feels the need to talk down to people as if they are entirely thick?0 -

On a separate subject, does anyone know of a software program which can pick out and match similarities in peoples' faces (see where I'm going here?)? You know, like they have on CSI?

At the risk of being struck off, I'm with CC...Martin & Evan sound a bit alike as well as looking alike...
I quite like Evan's approach....yes, he simplifies things, but in my experience that's what 90%+ of the population need. I noticed in the Sunday Time that the maths entry exams on my old degree course have had to be dropped because today's students are all failing them...what hope for everyone else if these are the students who should have a grade A/B maths A-level?I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -

But surely the issue is education needs improving, not news reports dumbing down?0 -
If you mean education of the general public about Economic Issues, which most people don't understand anyway, then yes!
If you don't mind me asking, why don't you like him? He is tasked with almost the same job as Martin, after allI find it hard to dislike someone without a good reason.

I'm an engineer. One of the things you learn early on in my trade is that there are lots of things that existing technology won't let you do. To get around this, you do two things - initiate research/development to get better technologies, and live with what you've got to give you the best solution possible in the meantime.
I'd suggest the same thing applies here. Education needs improving....do it. However, that doesn't mean that Evan shouldn't couch things in layman's terms in the meantime.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
But it's because he cuts out the jargon that more and more people understand the Economic principles behind the stories - that has to be a good thing!0

Can't agree about Martin being anything like Evan Davies. Martin is way sexier!0
