Female cat peeing in house

I have a female moggie cat and a female staffie dog.

The dog seems to think the cat ranks higher than her in the chain and although they "talk" to each other and rub up against each other (i.e. I know they're not scared of each other), the cat always seems to have the upper hand. Examples are the cat teasing the dog by running upstairs as the dog isn't allowed upstairs. If the dog is lying on the sofa on her bit of bed, the cat will jump up and sprawl herself out so that the dog jumps down and is then too scared/wimpy to jump back up. If the dog is eating dinner or a bone and the cat wants it, she'll take it. The reason why we didn't stop any of this at first was because we thought it was a good thing that the dog thought the cat ranked higher as then she wouldn't ever "go" for her, if that makes sense.

The cat has started peeing on the dog's bed (the one that we have on the floor, not the sofa one) and we are thinking it's something to do with dominance, but thought that just happened with dogs and that the peeing only happened with males. She doesn't pee on any other soft things, like the rug, mats, our bed etc.

Not quite sure how to stop it, but bf is threatening to get rid of cat. She doesn't have a cat litter tray and bf won't entertain the idea of getting her one (she had one for three weeks when we first got her).

Any suggestions?

Why won't your bf get a litter tray for her?

He just thinks it dirty and smelly (I know it wouldn't be if we cleaned it), but it also saves on kitty litter. We have a big garden and even if she just goes outside where her cat flap is, that's fine as there's a bit plant there.

She doesn't poo in the house and the weeing is very sporadic, so I don't think it's because she's annoyed that there isn't a litter tray for her to use. It's been 18 months since she had one, so don't think she remembers it anyways.

I semi agree with bf. I don't think there's any need for there to be a litter tray in the house if the cat has constant access to the outside. The dog has to wait for us to come home and let her out before she can do anything!

Very helpful. I'll have a cat who still pees on my dog's bed though.

LOL, I do tend to agree with !!!!!! here!! My partner knows who rules the roost in our house - the cat :)

Have you tried a Feliway diffuser to see if it helps? If she's stressed about anything they can be wonderful to use, but it does sound as if she's not the stressed one here so it might not help. I take it the cat flap is open all the time? I don't suppose there's any way you can shut the cat out of the area where the dog's bed is? I think that'd be impractical for you, thinking about it.

For cleaning, use either bicarb of soda or one of the cleaners you can get from vets or pets at home. Don't use bleach as that will encourage her to pee there.

Sorry, my first reply was a bit short - I was just on my way out. I'll see if I can think of anything else.

I think she is just being a little b***h, so I can see why bf is annoyed. I just don't know what to suggest. We just keep bunging the dog's bed in the washing machine and she has to make do with the one on the sofa.

The cat has no limits in the house besides the lodger's bedrooms as they keep their bedroom doors shut. I don't really want to shut the cat out of the front room as it then means the dog gets locked in the front room which I think would panic her as she gets confused when the front room door is shut on the rare occasion we do.

The cat flap is always open, so she has no excuses for not going out.

I'll have a look at this diffuser thingie, but I think I'm going to be tempted to do something with her if she just carries on peeing where she likes.

I'm not sure if their ages would have anything to do with it, but the cat is 2 and the dog is 1. They are both spayed.

Give her to me...... :rotfl: :rotfl:

It's got to be worth giving the diffuser a try first, you can get them online for about £15 and they last about a month, refills are cheaper. When I had to use one I found a difference in less than a month and just buy a refill now and again but I only need to use it once or twice a year now.

Hopefully someone else will be able to come up with otrher ideas for you.

If its something she's recently started doing, I would take her to the vets to check there is nothing wrong. Weeing in places they wouldn't normally, can indicate a bladder infection.

When you wash your dogs bed, make sure you use biological washing powder to break down all the enzymes in the urine, I'm also another one that's a fan of feliway diffusers .

Another thing I just thought of- are you sure its your cat? Have you caught her doing the deed? Is it possible another cat could be coming through the cat flap and trying to claim the place?

I hadn't thought of it being another cat, tbh, but I don't think the dog would let another cat in the catflap. She might be an sap, but I don't think she's that bad. Surely another cat wouldn't have the balls to come in, walk past a staff, and pee on her bed?

Thanks for everyone's help. It is quite a recent thing with the bed, but when we first got her, and took her litter tray away, she weed one on each of the lodgers' beds, hence why they now keep their doors shut.

She never wees on our bed though, I suppose she wouldn't if that's where she sleeps.
