It depends what chip/dashboard you have installed (btw I'd highly recommend Xbox Media Center). You won't be able to ftp onto it if you're using the standard microsoft dashboard (or not that I know of).
If you've got a router, connect the Xbox up to it just like you would with a pc. It's got an RJ45 slot round the back, just like on a pc.
You'll need to find out what the ip address is set to on your Xbox. In Xbox Media Center you can set this in the config file. From your pc it's a simple case of getting an ftp client (such as FileZilla) and ftping onto the Xbox, via it's ip address.
First steps would be to hook it up to a router/hub, and find out the ip address of the Xbox."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
problem is the router is downstairs on my dads computer and was wondering if i can just plug the xbox into my laptop?
so i need to put some software on my xbox to be able to connect to it?
i am currently in the process of downloading evolutionx if that is any good?
im not sure what chip i have got in it so i will have a word with the person who did it for me.
any more help on how to get the software working on the xbox would be appreciated.
i am a complete novice with this
thanks

Try and get hold of Xbox Media Center. Probably easier to do so than getting EvolutionX. It's also better than EvolutionX, a lot more functional. It can play music, videos, browse photos etc...
In order to put any other dashboard onto the Xbox you'll need to be able to ftp on to it though. You can either do this using a boot disc (actually get EvolutionX as it's good for this), or some chips have ftp functionality.
You can hook it up directly to your laptop but you'll need a piece of cross-over cable, ie CAT5 cable (standard network cable) but with the ends switched. A decent computer store should have some as it's what's used when hooking up lots of hubs/routers etc...

right,
i have been looking at the tutorials on xbox-scene and have got the screen for evolutionX up on my xbox but i cant connect to it from my laptop.
i have got a cross-over cable and i have FlashFXP on my computer.
any ideas on how to actually connect to the xbox?
Thanks in advance

There should be a default ftp setting. I can't remember what it is, might be worth googling it. Alternatively, you should be able to set the ip address of the Xbox in the settings for EvolutionX.
Set it to something like 10.0.0.4, and also set the ip address of your laptop to a similar subnet, ie 10.0.0.5. You can do this by right-clicking on My Netowrk Places > Properties > right click on Local Area Network > properties > double click on TCP/IP and set it in there. You'll need a subnet of 255.255.255.0.
Probably worth googling using cross over cable, it's been years since I've had to do it so can't remember too well.
Once you have set the above up, connect to the xbox using FlashFxp. Set the ip address, and the username and password are usually by default 'xbox, 'xbox'."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
right,
i can connect to my xbox now and have just backed up the drives on it.
i have had a look at how to backup my games and it says to start up the xbox evolutionX and to put the game in and it should show up in flasfxp in the d: of the xbox but there isnt anythin comin up in it.its just a blank drive.
can anyone help me with this?
Thanks

You want to get a program called DVD2Xbox.
You can add shortcuts to other apps in EvolutionX, it's in one of the config files. The above app, once loaded is stupidly simply. You can select to put the game onto the Xbox's hard drive, or a network share. It's click and select, very simple. An excellent app.
There's also another app, to do like you say, where it'll create a special format (ie Xbox format) image from files in an ftp folder. Will need to check that when I get home.
You should look into using Xbox Media Center. It's easy to set up and far better than EvolutionX."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
im going to download xbox media player and see what its like.
can you give me a step by step guide of how to copy one of the games i have?
its not a copied game, so i know that my computer wont read it if i put it in the dvd drive and i have to put the game in the xbox and transfer the game files from the xbox to my laptop so i can make a backup of the game incase it gets damaged because this has happened to me before and its a waste of money buying the game again.
any help would be appreciated
thanks

It's been a while since I've done that so I can't remember. There'll be a guide on Xbox scene or how to make a backup.
I put a bigger hard drive in the Xbox, use DVD2Xbox and put the game on the hard drive. That way the original can sit upstairs, staying in good condition, and I can play the game (and it loads quicker too) from the hard drive."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
re the cable required - is this the same cable as required by xbox live?Matched Betting and Casino Bagging Target: £3500 (Masters degree course fees)
