What can we do?

My husband has been on my bank account with me for 2 years. A year ago he tried to get a debit card for the account but was declined. To be fair we were often overdrawn at the time so we thought fair enough. Today he tried again to apply for a card with £50 withdrawl limit and again it was declined! We now have our account in good working offer and they will even give us a loan of up to £25000!! All of his wages etc are paid into the account but there is only me can use it. The problem we have is I am going into hospital soon and the bills won't be able to be paid or anything because I'm the only one who can access the money, what, if anything, can we do?

The first thing I would do is contact the bank and find out why they are declining.

Is this a joint account or not?
If it is, what is the problem?
The husband can pay the bills (e.g. via online banking) in exactly the same way as the wife.
Or am I missing something ...
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

If its his money and a joint account there sud be no problem?

    Change banks if it is....
  • Has he had any past credit problems at all, even late payments can have an affect on his credit rating.

It is certainly worth enquiring to the particular bank as to why he cannot have a debit card on your joint account.

Doe he have his own account elsewhere or does he simply have access to this one account?

I would also think about opening a secondary joint account somewhere else so your husband can have easy access to money whilst you are in hospital.

    Which bank does this involve?

  • Hi and thanks for your replies!

Yes it is a joint account but unfortunately he can't pay bills through online banking because we have stupid pinsentry and you need a card, the only card is mine and as we know you aren't allowed to tell anyone at all your pin number which is also needed, frustrating but necessary...

He does have an account in his own name that only gets used for one payment a month which I could transfer some money into, I never thought of that ...lol...he does have a card for that one :j

I think we are going to go to the bank because even just a card to withdraw cash and not do anything else would help :A

    Hi
I work for Barclays and the reason this happens is that both individuals are credit scored on their separate incomes. So it seems you credit scored and not him. What you can do is apply for him to have an electron card which he doesnt get credit scored and therefore he can have one. Only downside of this is that you cant have two types of card on one account so you would need to downgrade your card too. Frustrating, but I think electron is more widely accepted now but still can get declined as there is no chq guarantee limit.
What I would suggest is to go back to the branch and ask (insist if necessary) that they appeal the decision stating the reason you gave about the loan and also that you have a card no problem and as all debts on the account are joint this appeal should be overturned. This takes three hours so if you go in in the morning a staff member could have the app processed by the afternoon.
Failing that he could call telephone banking and ask for a pin there and use that?
Let me know how you get on there are other ways round this but these are the best i think.
