Home - Content Insurance Only

Hello Everyone,
This is my first time ever I am thinking about a home insurance and I am not even in my 20s anymore.
The only reason I am actually thinking about it is the fact that there was a burglary in my colleagues house, only two weeks after their wedding. How nasty is that? Anyway it gave me something to think about.
Since I am renting, I would be only interested in a content coverage. But again I am also sharing the house with 2 people. Unlike me they are not such electronic-gadget-nerds as I and have barely anything worth to be stolen.
I read through the house insurance article here. but the quotes are always meant to be for house owners or people who need a building coverage. How would I get a quote for content only coverage?
Since I am totally new to this any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Houman

I've never resided in a bought house under my own name lol, always rented. & never had a problem getting home contents insurance only. I was with Royal&Sun Alliance-became More Than, was with another company then moved to Kwik Fit Insurance for Aug 2007. Just literally did a rekkie & found Esure the cheapest for me, but not renewing until this August. Check the list of insurance comparison websites given & you will fine. Tc.0

Thanks for your replies,
I have checked the quotes. eSure seems to be the cheapest, however I read some bad reviews about it. Some say they are cheap but they don't pay out easily and give you a hard time. I also got a quote from Endsleigh, which seem to be more specialised in house sharing. What do you think?
I don't have much to insure anyway. I calculated that all I have is no more than £10.000 (Ikea furniture, cloth, collection and electronics). Should I better go for 15.000 cover just to be sure to be not undercovered? I read if something happens the insurance sends an evaluater to check your possessions. And if they claim you were underinsurred you would get only parts of the money. Endsleigh wants for 10.000 cover £164 and for 15.000 £192. Are these rates ok?
Many Thanks for your advice,0 -
Hi
I am renting and I recently took out home contents insurance with Endsleigh. I am paying just £8.96 per month (includes laptop & ipods). They are for anyone who wants contents insurance, not necessarily house sharing. I don't share with anyone.0 -
Maybe sharing is more expensive. Its also my first time I am going for a content insurance. I have no history. May I ask how much total cover you have taken?0

It would depend on the size of the claim. All insurers will have a (confidential) cash limit where they will send out an loss adjustor on a claim. Part of their job is check for any underinsurance if possible and advise the policy holder according. However, this isnt their main job and people will not be sent out simply to check on the value of somebodies contents.0 -

I see. But these guys are only sent out if a burglary happens right? They don't send anyone to check if I have done it correctly right after i sign the contract. So in other words once they actually have to pay they try to find excuses not to pay?
Gosh I love insurance.0 -
No, it is your responsibilty to ensure that you are adequatly insured- you cannot blame the insurance company if you have failed to advise them correctly.
If you are underinsured, depending on the amount they would either void the policy for misrepresentation or apply the average condition, which is basically-
(Amount insured/Value should be insured) * Loss
So if you are insured for £10,000 when it should be £20,000 and had a £5000 claim, they would only pay out £2500.0 -
Please help! I have only 8 days cool-off period left and I am not sure if this policy I ve bought is correct. I went with Endsleigh Contents insurrance. I just had a chat with a young chap on the phone, which didn't really convince me.
Have a look first at what they have sent me and what I am insured for:Contents Sum Insured £10,000 The following limits apply in addition to any amount stated in Your Policy document:- £3,500 valuables in total £2,000 any one valuable article except computer equipment £4,000 computer equipment £500 contents in garage(s) £500 contents in outbuildings other than garage(s) £1,000 items used for business purposes you are responsible for paying the first £50 excess for claims under this cover.
Even though I have a total valuable insurance for £10.000 the categories are worring me. My computer equipment + all accessories are no more worth than £2000. I have no Garage nor any contents in outbuildings. Thats £3000 in total overinsured and wasted. However my HDTV, Console and surround System, that definitely don't fall into the category of computer, is left there in other categories. Additionally I have a collection. The guy on the phone said, the important thing is that I am insured for £10.000 and that would cover everything. But the categories are worring me that if something happens - due the categories - some items are overinsured and others and underinsured. This way they would find an excuse not paying me off.I have absolutely no experience in these things. Its the first time I am buying a content insurance and would really appreciate if you could give me some tips what I could do.There seem to be no email address for Endsleigh where I could get a response in written. Please help!
Thanks
