^So many people wanted a 'free lunch': there ain't no such thing: stating the obvious, yes, but somebody should tell them...anyhow, they're beginning to learn - unfortunately, the hard way :)

There are lot's of pointless threads here anyway such as the continual ones trying to scare people away from the Icelandic banks, I really don't see the need to stop posters complaining about loss of income! :)

IMHO there is nowt wrong with the thread, it's had lot's of interest which is a good thing in a discussion forum. :)

Indeed but this is one the more pointless ones I feel. I thought it would be more suitable for the pub, moaning and all that. I would have thought this forum is more for asking questions and getting answers rather than arguing and discussing :)

:rotfl: Uve found the thread worth discussing, Internet forums are for discussions, Question time is for questions and answers. :rotfl:

Could be worse. Was a time when receiving any form of interest on a loan was considered to be usury and as such a mortal sin for which the penalty was ex-communication, refusal of a Christian burial, and eternal damnation in hell. Which seems a little harsh. It was later legalised under Henry VIII.

Nowadays we only have to answer to the taxman who wants paying on the full whack even if the rate of interest is less than enough to keep pace with inflation. With the current RPI of 4% you need at least 5% at the 20% tax rate just to get your money back or 6.7% at the 40% rate. (Not too good but think of it as your chance to go to heaven).

That's what he does as a saver. Sorry to be a pedant but the difference between lending and borrowing is quite important

It was meant as in the past.

My point to the OP was.. Did he consider himself a plonker during those times that he needed to "borrow" money from someone better off than himself ?

    Yes
