Is now the time to be buying in the States?

I haven’t researched this at all, however at work we have internet radio and quite often the radio station is of American origin.
There are constantly adverts on the radio saying things like: “We have hundreds of repossessed homes all across America to suit any budget, a typical 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house will now cost you from $20,000. With our no money down mortgage you can purchase such a property and be paying under $300 a month in repayments”.
What’s to stop me buying a property in America for £10-15k cash and renting it out?
Even if it lose more value, I’m not too bothered, I’d rather own a house in the states that could be worth a lot more in a few years than a car that’s just going to be worth nothing in 10 years.
