I think you have things mixed up.

Photoshop Extended is more expensive than the standard Photoshop CS3. It has features for medial professionals (for MRI scans image files, and other specialist tools), architects for measuring etc. I have the Extended version in the full Premium suite, but have never used the additional features, so unless you need them save your money, most users don't even scrape the surface of the standard version.

Perhaps you are considering Photoshop Elements, which is a cut down version of Photoshop, hundreds cheaper, but with most basic facilities a home user would require?

I dont know, but when I checked amazon this is what I found

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-Systems-Inc-Photoshop-CS3/dp/B000O17CQ0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1207768010&sr=8-2

    and

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-Photoshop-Extended-CS3-Student/dp/B000OZ2EPU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1207768010&sr=8-5

perhaps its the student edition thats why, or maybe the student version has cut down features thats why its much cheaper

    One is CS3 full retail.
The cheaper version is CS3 Extended Student Version that gets a whopping discount ,Retail not far of a grand . Its not cut down in any shape or form as far as i am aware but check with Adobe if buying .
You may well qualify for the student version .
