Utility company insurances for emergencies

My first ever post!!

Have had Britsh Gas Central Heating Cover for years & am fairly happy. Recently have managed to acquire 'Water Supply Cover' and 'Gas Supply Pipe' cover (both from United Utilities) both on "special introductory offer." However, was not completely convinced, so checked household insurance. Both pipes covered on house insurance, but only for accidental damage, not for wear and tear - I confirmed this by phoning! Then phoned United Utilities to check and was told that their policies cover the supply pipes for wear & tear repairs. Whilst on phone, I was also offered plumbing and drainage cover, which I politely declined!

Are any of these policies worth it? (Gas & water supply pipes total about £29 a year, so not extortionate/ plumbing around £45-£50).

Does anyone know of a company that covers most eventualities rather than having separate policies for everything? Or would this be more expensive?

Has anyone had similar experience?

Should I just save the money in case of emergency?

Apologies if this should be on Utilities board, but as it's cross utility and insurance, I've plumped for this one.

  • Hi,

When I took out my household insurance I took out the extra cover option and this seems to cover me for problems with wear and tear on pipes
The cost of repairing burst pipes, as well as the damage they cause, even when the cause is normal wear and tear.

This cover costs me about £50 a year more than the very basic buildings cover (and about £30 a year more than basic + accidental damage).
My insurance cover is through a staff policy so I can't recommend the particular company, but the insurance policy is underwritten by London and Edinburgh Insurance Company, so you may well be able to find similar cover elsewhere.

  • Thanks for tip. I seem to remember that option from some home insurance policy in the past. Can't remember which one though! Home insurance renewal due soon, so I'll shop around and see what's out there.
