Credit/Debit Card Machines

Hi All, I run a small business and I'm looking to set up a Credit/Debit Card Machine facility - I will contact my existing bank and some others to ask about this facility and compare costs eg. charge for transactions, monthly rental etc.
Does anyone have any experience in this departement - ie. have you done your homework and found the most competitve provider?
Anything else i would need to consider if setting up such a facility.
regards Huggins

Do you actually need a terminal or would you manage with an IMA (internet merchant account), if you only need a virtual terminal ( for customer not present transactions) it can be a lot cheaper than traditional chip and pin machines.
If you deal face to face with customers, especially if not on a regular basis - you can get a mobile pos system that just uses your mobile phone and a computer ( for access to your account).
That is how we started off - we used to do events and shows and a normal machine was £30 a month for rental, we went through Adelante and used their java pos , which at the time was £5 a month.
We are now internet only and use Secpay along with an IMA with Natwest streamline. Secpay costs form £11 a month and we use it as our online payment processor - it also has a virtual terminal for taking phone payments.
It was £150 set up with Streamline and no monthly fee other than tranaction fees, average fees are around £10 a month (2% on credit cards and 35p on debit cards).

I went through this about 3 years ago and no-one would give rates until you applied for their system. In the end I realised that the Fed of Small businesses has a special deal with streamline if you are a member, so joined. There are lots of other benefits too so it is worth it. I have been happy and get a good deal.NO EXCUSES - THIS YEAR IT'S PERSONAL..........0

I'm a small trader dealing in the carpet trade.
Does anyone know where I can get a Credit Card Machine from that does not require these huge great monthly rentals I am being quoted.
There must be someone out there that just allows a pay-as-you-go system.:cool:0 -
I used to use http://www.adelante.co.uk/chipandpin.html - a good company and it will probably be the best quote you will see. Only stopped because we stopped doing market stalls. However, you need to have a merchant banking line so that adds to the cost of the terminal rental. You will probably be seeing around £60-£100 per month of rental + minimum charges. Make sure you get a GSM one that will work anywhere.0

Peeps asking for advice, stay away from anything recommended by people who have just signed up especially to promote that business, only trust regular posters.0
