downstairs radiators cold?

Options
Now that it's getting a bit cooler we've had the heating on a couple of times recently. Initially all the radiators heat up then after a while the downstairs ones cool off but the upstairs stay warm. All rads are fitted with 2 way trv valves and sometimes by opening a valve fully the heat comes back into that particular radiator. My initial thought was the valves were designed to heat the rad up then let it cool then heat it back up again but apparently not. Any suggestions? It's fed by an oil fired combi boiler BTW.

I had this last year - possibly...
It may be that the system needs balencing. Basically turn them all off at the valves and then, starting nearest the boiler, open the valve just enough for them to get hot, then move onto the next one. it's something to do with the pressure of the water, link follows that will hopefully make a bit more sense...

The Radiators may need bleeding of air?

There should be a small screw type valve (you may have been supplied a key for it) at the top of the radiators, when opened it will release any air in the system. Just beware that once all the air has gone hot water will come out of the hole!.

    Repeat for each radiator.

If this is the reason for the cold radiator, it's a simple job to perform........and I hold an old cloth next to the valve to catch the mucky (blackish) water drips.;)
