Not for failure to display it can't. The maximum penalty is £200.

Unlicenced vehicles can and will be clamped or removed.

The thing to do in that situation is put a note inside the windscreen where the disc normally is saying ''please don't ticket, will be taxed tomorrow'' and put the date. No guarantees, but I know from experience this can work.

Cars are not clamped and impounded immediately. First a warning notice (and fine) will be placed on the windscreen...24 hours later they come back to remove.

An obvious one...park the car close to a van or something so that at least one number plate can't be seen (the one facing the traffic flow, preferably).

Or park it at the 24 hour Asda. ;)

To be honest, the police and/or DVLA are usually fairly agreeable if you can prove that you only recently bought the car and haven't had the ability to purchase a tax disk yet. Although it doesn't make it any more legal, it will hopefully give you a little peace of mind. :P

On this note, I think my local coppers think I'm either a little nuts, or are running some variety of illegal car-sharing/swapping scheme. :P They have pulled me over three times this year, in three different cars, all untaxed. xD I've give them the same, (genuine) reason each time - I haven't had the ability to purchase a tax disk yet) and although they gave me 5 days to present last time, they've let me off each time. See, how I've ended up in three different cars is since I know my car was going to repo'ed, I started buying cars at auction - Start little, a little motor for £200, clean it up a bit and taz/MOT it and put it back through the auction to claim a little more money on it. Add a little from savings, and buy another. Repeat, until you have a car you want. xD Gone froma Rover costing £180 to a Polo costing £240, to my current punto costing £325

I'm sure you'd make more money if you sold them privately, not at auction.

Probably, but I like having the guarenteed sale or money in hand option that my local auction offers. :P Means I know the car is going to sell without hanging around on my driveway for weeks while I want to be working my way up to a better car.

which auction are you refering to? If using a main one like BCA the auction fees would hammer any profit, plus you'd have the time between sale and the cheque clearing to be car less.
