windows xp update slows comp

i have auto updates set for midnight,but once in a while (like now) i get the little shield with the exclamation mark come up down on the task bar and my computer goes on a go slow.

Q why is it downloading updates at 10 in the morning when i have it set for midnight

Q why will it now take up to 8 hours to download

Q why is slowing up everything

    dont know but i find the best way to update is when i am online as now /using the computer and grab the updates . I have never had any of the problems you describe even on automatic updates .

    Between posting i have downloaded 35 mb of updates no problem .
    Could be your ISP ??

    Might be worth googling the problem on the MS tech boards .

    speed is 512

    it works fine except maybe once a month this windows update kicks in and slows it down.
    And thats strange to, i presume updates are very regular,so why is this a rare (ish) event:confused:

    Probably still a problem with your ISP, maybe it's throttling certain connections. Today is the day most people get their critical updates and there are a few of them. Like jje, I've actually downloaded something like 150 odd MiB of updates since you started this thread without speed problems.
