I have a Home Cinema with 400W output. Would one with 1000W output be noticeably different?

I am looking at this one - http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0742372323.1207731360@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccekadedkjfddeicflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=721725&category_oid=

Thanks

The short answer is: not necessarily!

There are several ways of measuring power output (e.g. RMS, Peak, PMPO) and if you are not sure that you are comparing the same thing then the comparison may be meaningless.

For example, a system with total output power of 400W RMS will typically be able to deliver a lot more power than one rated at 1000W PMPO.

It's also worth noting that the human ear has a non-linear response to sound, so it's seldom that anyone will notice the differences at the 100+Watt level.

I believe it's generally accepted that it's the quality of the first 5W of output that is more important than the total quantity of output - though if you're running a Public Address system in a stadium then different rules apply!

Thanks for the help.. I have decided against it for now, as the sound on the one we have is actually not too bad...

Lets put it this way. Unless you use your 400W on full volume and it's still not loud enough, whats the point of 1000W?

I have a Panasonic SA-HE7 amp. It's 100W a channel and I run out of the ability to stand the volume long before it runs out of the ability to increase it.

Get some high quality speakers instead.

Also to add, whatever claims of wattage from these home-cinema-in-a-box should be taken with a dump truck of salt.

Even with separates, AV Receiver makes tend to over inflate their per channel output at the entry level range, and in reality you'd only get a fraction of the power when all channels are being driven.
