washing machine - not spinning - help please

Hi everyone,

I did some hand washing last night and out it in the machine to spin - as I often do. The machine had power , made noise as if it was working but was not spinning.

I tried a couple of times but not spinning. Didn't want to put on a cycle with water as I'm going on holiday in couple of days & don't need problems right now.

The machine is an Indesit & 10 years old - any ideas what I can try before I give in & get new machine ??

Thanks in advance...

Anne

No idea really but just a suggestion, could it be the belt? Does it wash on other programs and turn?

It could just be the brushes, mine used to need replacing every couple of years due to the amount of washing I do.
I'm afraid I don't know how to change them on an Indesit but if you can find out, it used to cost me less than £10 to get replacement ones for my Hotpoint and I could fit them myself, so worth looking at before paying out for an engineer or a new machine.

  • Sounds like the brushes are worn. I've replaced mine on a Bosch machine and it was quite easy, following instructions I found on the net. Do a search for the model to get the brush serial numbers (or ask a parts shop) and see if you can find a guide on how to change them. Search for something like "How to change motor brushes on an Indesit ___ washing machine". You'll be surpised what you find. It could make the difference between spending £20 for brushes or £300 for a new machine. You can also get new motor brushes from ebaY.

    Hi,

Thanks for the advice - I'll have a look when I get back home - willing to have a go but may be too much for me. Hard enough for me to get it out from under the unit & worktop.

There are times when a big strong bloke comes in handy ......

    regards Anne;)
  • If it is making all the noises, but the drum is not turning then it is probably the belt. It is pretty simple to fix on most machines and is similar to fitting a fan belt on a car.

I would suggest it's most probably your brushes

The carbon brushes are pushed onto the washers motor by springs, there is a copper braided wire which runs thro the centre of this spring

as the brushes wear away the wire straightens out until it gets to it's limit, the brushes then do not reach the motor so no electric current runs thro them, hence no revolving drum

done changes on Indesits, Hoovers, Siemens and Bosch

pretty straight forward to do if your a DIY type

PM the model if you need any help

I have a hotpoint washer/dryer - it would wash then refuse to spin and rinse the clothes. Lights would flash etc etc.

Turned out it was my sink that was blocked and the water could not drain away fast enough for the washer to continue the cycle...

This might help someone one day..... (save them having it at the menders shop for a week to find out you need a plunger!)

I had a problem with mine a while ago where it would do every thing exept the drum wouldnt turn. It turned out it was the wiring to the module. The module is a small printed circuit board situated between the main control and the motor (just follow the wiring loom from the motor).
I would also try checking all the connections on the motor and control units as they can come loose with the vibrations of the machine. Dont worry all the connections are plastic plug and sockets and can only be connected one way.
Then have a check round like the others have said.
    Good luck
  • If the motor is turning, then it is likely that it is the belt. This should help-
