The only thing I have encouraged my left hander to do the right handed way is in using cutlery and flatware, cos I think it would put him at a social dissadvantage not to be able to follow dining etiquette. (Most left handers I know do not re-arrange their place settings).

My daughter is right handed but uses her cutlery left handed ie knife in left hand fork in right. My Grandma was left handed and held her cutlery the same as my daughter. No-body says anything about it - in fact they probably don't even notice!

I'm left handed, and I can always remember my primary teacher telling me that she was left handed at school but they (in the Dark Ages, she was quite old!) forced her to write left handed. She always said how awkward it was and how you should always write with the hand that you find best. Don't pressurise anyone to do something that they can't.

BTW, I use scissors right-handedly. Figure that one!

  • My father is left handed, and was forced to write with his right hand at school - he is no spring chicken!;)

Anyway, it left him with a speech impediment, which is a recognised possible side effect of not being allowed to use his dominant hand.

My brothers eldest daughter is left handed, and she couldn't work out where the child had inherited that from - my brother hadn't told her about Dad... ::)
    The IVF worked;DS born 2006.
  • I am left handed - and love it! Sure there's the occasional problem with chequebooks (the stubs get in the way), and door handles (they're also mainly on the 'wrong' side) - but this really is nothing to worry about.

Although I am creative and conceptually 'lateral', I'm not sure whether this is defined by my biological make-up or upbringing.

The only things I do right handed are golf and batting (in cricket) - because that's how my father taught me.

I would suggest that you encourage your son in whatever he does with either hand - it's not about 'how' it's what they do with it!!

Also, for writing, if your son does start to write with his left hand, make sure that you encourage him to write with his hand pointed up the paper (rather than bent round) - my mother helped me with this and I have no problems with smudging or wrist pains....

I'm left-handed & I always get a chequebook without stubs. There's a place to list all the transactions at the front instead. I'm with Firstdirect, but I'm sure a lot of banks must do these chequebooks as well. I know I also used to have a left-handed one, but I can't remember if that was FD or my old bank, Lloyds.

My great-aunt ( born in 1901) was left-handed and she always used to tell us the story of how she was forced to write with her right hand at school. Every time she tried to write with her left, the teacher would slap her left hand with the ruler! They even tied her left hand behind her back on occasions. As a result she used to write with her right, and do everything else the left-handed way. Thank goodness some things about school have changed for the better.
  • When I was about 5 I fell of a sledge (ah for the snowy days when we could go sledging) which then ran over my right wrist. Unfortuately for my father was still on the sledge.

Because of the resulting broken wrist I was forced to do alot of things left handed for quite a long time.

Now days I am pretty much ambidextous except for writting which I do right handed and throwing wich I do left handed.

Please don't try and influence your childs preferred hand but if you do want to help them encourage using their weaker hand as a back up.
Most things in life are easy it's just doing them well that's difficult !!!!!!!!!! :D:D

Actually the stubs was a bit of a 'red herring' - I had been trying desperately hard to think of reasons why being left handed was a problem... because my mum spent time with me as a kid, I never had the 'crab hand' writing problem... therefore stubs are not an issue.

Also, on a completely separate note, I am sure that computer games joypads actually favour left handed players - because the left hand does all the motion and the right hand just bashes the occasional button... anyone like to add their 'benefits'. Oh, and when I play five a side football, it's always worth a goal or two, because other players instinctively 'cover' my right foot. Fools! Mwahaaahaahaaa ;D
