    hi all

    sad news i'm afraid.

this afternoon bert fell over 3 times within minutes, i rang the vet and she asked me to bring him in.

i took him in and one minute there he was wagging his tail at all the other dogs, then he collapsed and had some sort of fit, there was a panic for a short while and the vet said there was no more she could do - she stated the kindest thing for him would be to have him put down there and then - i agreed as realisticly i knew it was the right thing to do given the current situation. The vet said that she was shocked how he had deteriorated and could only assume that he had an aggressive brain tumour.

the good bit is that we were there with him when he passed and he knew nothing about what was happening

So very sorry for your loss.We had to make this tough decision 3 weeks ago for our beloved dog,and it never gets any easier. With ours it was a very very gradual decline in all ways,so you don't always realise how bad things have got.But a new ,young vet gently but honestly pointed out that she really was not enjoying life, and if we asked her to put her to sleep she would not talk us out of it..We were lucky,we had a few more days to come to terms with it,and spoil her,and say goodbye.

As you say at least you were with her,and it really is the kindest thing we can do for our beloved friends. It is only right that we suffer the pain of losing them, and not them suffer the pain of living with an illness or disease that will slowly and cruelly kill them,in pain and distress. The unlucky animals are the ones that don't have caring owners to help ease their passing.

It will get easier, though i am nearly in tears now remembering her last day and how i wanted time to stand still.

Very sorry for your loss :(. I was obviously the best thing for Bert, but that doesn't make you feel any better. Sometimes the kindest thing to do is let them go.

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

    Very sorry for your loss.
I know how hard it is.
My beloved Molly died on Tuesday last week, she was nearly 11. We are all devastated.
I have had Molly cremated, and her ashes will be coming home to us.
I feel better knowing she will always be here with me.

The best advice i have been given on here is to be kind to yourself and grieve for your dog, and enjoy all the happy memories you have.

So sorry for your loss. As you said, he wouldn't have known anything about it, and you were with him until the very end - these are the kindest, if sometimes the hardest, things.

I'm really sorry to hear of your loss.Big (((hugs))) to you and your family.

I found this a comfort when I had to let my girl go to the bridge. Hope it helps.

    If it should be....

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done,
for we know this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
but don't let grief then stay your hand,
for this day, more than the rest,
your love and friendship must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
Would you want me to suffer?

    So,when the time comes,
    please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend,
only stay with me until the end,
and hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

It is a kindness that you do to me,
although my tail it's last has waved,
from pain and suffering I have been saved.

    Do not grieve,
    it should be you,
who must decide this thing to do.

    We've been so close,
    we two these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I'm so sorry to hear of all your losses.

Our family border collie cross went through a similar thing back in September of 2006 and it only seems like last week she was growling at me for walking passed her. Its reduced me to tears even mow thinking about her last day but it is kinder to them. Seeing her in pain is something we couldnt face.

Now as my baby reaches about 11 and has numerous lumps I'm getting worried that I'll have to go through it all again.
