Elec Bill Problem

Hi, hope you're all good

Issue with electricity. We were with Npower, paying bills, no probs. Then received a letter saying "sorry you're leaving us". Which we weren't. Then received a letter saying that a mistake had been made and it was getting sorted out, we should leave it with them. Fair enough.

Time passed, no bills, we assume they are sorting. Last month we get a final bill from Npower dated last year, followed up with a demand from Scottish Power for £xxx. We've never been with SP so no idea why they are charging us and it's addressed to "The Occupier". This letter is followed up shortly by one from a debt company demanding the money or they'll blah blah blah (the usual). Phoned the debt company, state we've never been with SP, told we have to phone them and sort it out ourselves or they'll cut us off and take us (well "The Occupier") to court.

What to do? Not very happy paying money to SP as we never switched to them and don't see why they should be demanding cash, they never sent us a blooming bill in the first place, just the demand!! How can they do this?

Anybody with advice? Gratefully received :j

Thanks in advance :)

Speak to Energywatch, 08459 060708. This is an erroniouse transfer and they should be able to sort it out for you - either by raising an enquiry with the high level compaints team in each company or by escallating it to a formal complaint. Whatever you do don't pay the debt collectors until this problem has been resolved. You cannot be disconnected for an old bill - this is called a non prioirty bill and whoever your current supplier is will need to go through around 5 stages before disconnection becomes a problem. Energywatch will be able to place holds with each supplier way before then. Good luck

You haven't let some salesman look at your meter?

There have been many cases of these ***** forging the signature of a householder on a transfer document.

Ensure when it is sorted that you are not 'blacklisted' with a Credit Reference Ageny.

No, any salesman gets the heave if they turn up, so doubtful that would be the case, though wouldn't surprise me if some dodgy git pushed it through somehow, especially so as I do remember a guy at the door that I told to go around the time it all kicked off.

Cheerz for the advice, will phone Energy Watch

A wee update. Turns out we were transferred from npower to somewhere else and then to SP, who then billed us for 1mth (and not a cheap month either!) and missed out the period before. It also turns out that they have the wrong meter number and meter reading, so they've made a complete balls up. Meter number is similar but misses out one digit and meter reading is 60000 out compared to what it is.

I've been informed that compensation could be due to help assist with the large bill heading our way, anybody have any idea on what level or how it's worked out? Also, what's the best course of action, stick with npower or switch? Can we insist on discounts as they said they were sorting things out and then didn't bother and it seems unfair they can throw a bill from then until now at standard rates, it's not going to be cheap!!

    Thanks :)
