No cold water upstairs!

Options
Help! Does anyone know what to do if the cold water isn't working upstairs?! The toilet will not refill either but everything downstairs is fine. I'm going on holiday in a couple of days and am having people house sit so would really like to try and sort this problem out ASAP. Thanks for reading this and hope you can help!

If the cold water is off the mains, check to see if any valves are turned off.
The water could be tank feed,if so check in your loft for a large storage tank, the ballvalve could have stuck, not allowing the tank to fill, but if you have hot water through your taps this might not be the case, unless you have a fortic cylinder as well.
    Firstly check all valves.

I started running the bath yesterday & it stopped at around 3 inches! Checked all other taps, only the kitchen mains in action. I have a large loft tank which I guess is cold water & a hot water tank in the airing cupboard. This morning there was enough water there to get a wash although the shower had no pressure so I sat in the cubicle. I don't fancy it but I guess I need to climb in the loft with a torch to see if there's any water in the tank. I'm trying to get hold of a plumber but in the meantime. Any idea how much a plumber might charge in best case/worst case scenarios?

Well, I've just made some acrobatic manouvres to get in & out of my loft & can't see any signs of leaking nor any way to look into the huge monstrousity of a tank. It is plop plopping as it always does. I did notice some strange crusts on one of the pipes inside the airing cupboard but it's full of pipes & switches in there. If anyone has ideas please shout. Have contacted rated tradesmen & another for quotes but none forthcoming as yet, maybe £100 or under has put them off?

Water pressure was good in the shower this morning so maybe it was just an air lock? I'll run the bath tonight & see whether it stops at 3 inches again!
  • Hi

You really need to look IN the tank in the roof.

Well, haven't made the climb back into the loft yet. Spoke to a plumber yesterday, he reckons that it's filling slowly overnight (sounds about right). Said I'd need a new part (can't remember what he said it was) that sounds like it's getting stuck & will cost around £70-£80. That sounds quite expensive to me as there's nothing costing that much on screwfix. Any thoughts?
  • Hi

As in post 2 look in the tank ,it might be the ballvalve is stuck and just by moving it up and down will free it.If it's blocked it can be stripped down and cleaned. If it's a write off that's when you might pay £70 -£80 for a replacement including labour

My guess is the washer. Let us know.

Will try to look in the tank at the weekend. Have ordered some loft ladders from Screwfix to arrive saturday as I don't fancy any more acrobatics right now.
  • Sorry, realise this is an old thread-
But I don't have any water at all upstairs, and downstairs only cold from the mains. We don't have a cold water tank in our loft, and the tank in the airing cupboard only seems to be an immersion heater, which also isn't filling up. any ideas???
