task bar has a mind of it's own

Looking for a brilliant solution to the problem of my task bar suddenly for no reason that I can find deciding not to display the 'tasks' accross the bar but in a horrid little box to the left that only shows one and arrows to get to the others. I hate it. I have been into the control panel and tried to change it to the original one but nothing seems to do it. So please if you know how, tell me and put me out of my misery. Thanks for your time

This worked for me, using Vista:
Right click on the task bar;
Untick 'Lock the taskbar';
Drag the tasks as far left as they'll go;
Right click again and put the tick back on 'Lock the taskbar'.
