Ebay email - advice please!

I'm currently selling a mobile phone on ebay, and received this message from a buyer - which is obviously dodgy:

'Will you accept £150 for this item.i want to buy it for my old school friend, also we like to know if the item is in good condition.are old or new is the item.i will be paying you with (bidpay money order).incase you don't know about (bidpay)pls let me know so that i can explain.i will need all this for payment from bidpay.name, address, city, state, code, phone number, valid email address for comfrimation of payment fron bidpay.item price including postage via royalmail first class delivery to nigeria.reply me very soon. stelermoring04 '

However, I then received an email from 'ukrswebhelp@ebay.com' saying:

"Dear ......:

Our records indicate that you recently sent an email to or received an email
from stelermoring04 through the eBay email system (for example, you may have
sent an email to this member through Ask Seller a Question or received an email
from this member through Contact eBay Member).

Sometimes eBay accounts are used to send email solicitations for transactions
outside of eBay, or to send unrelated questions in hopes that you will respond
so that the other party can obtain your email address. We wanted you to be aware
of the potential fraud risk these solicitations pose and encourage you to be
cautious about the email you received from this member.

Please keep in mind, sales that take place outside of eBay are not eligible for
any eBay or PayPal protective services and you run the risk of losing your money
or your item if you complete these transactions. We would encourage you to
review the eBay pages related to Fraud Protection at the address provided below
for information on steps you can take to ensure that your transactions are
successful:

Should you have paid for this item, please write with details through our
"Contact Us" form found on the page below:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/contact_inline/index.html

Please select "Report problems with other eBay members > Fraud concerns for
buyers > You paid for an item but never received it"

If you have paid for the item through PayPal, you may find the following page
useful:

Trust & Safety Department"

Is that dodgy too??? Who can you trust? I've already been forced to relist this item three times due to timewasters, and it's so frustrating.

Cheers all! x

hi i had the same emails as i was selling a phone to,i replied to the ebay question one,but hid my email,i phoned ebay, they said ppl are trying to get ppl's email through ebay,so they said i did the right thing.

i just said in the reply that i only post to uk etc...and i never heard anything again...and at last i sold the phone y/day to a uk bidder...phew.
  • hMM JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS ONE, THEY ASK YOU A QUESTION YOU EMAIL THEM BACK SHOWING YOUR EMAIL ADDY
THEY THEN SEND A SPOOF EMAIL WHICH NO DOUBT TO ANSWER YOU HAVE TO PUT IN YOUR EBAY ID AND PASSWORD AND BINGO THEY CAN ABUSE YOUR ACCOUNT

Thankfully I didn't reply to either of them, or go to any links etc... I sent them to the ebay spoof email, and they've replied to let me know that the second email really WAS from them!

I'd have thought it was genuine. After all, what could be gained by sending a spoof email with the above content? It's not asking you to give out any information.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
