We have a tongue and groove wooden ceiling thats varnish and it makes the ceiling dark
I want to paint it white and looking for a product for some time that will cut down on workload/dust rather than have it stripped/sanded down etc.
I think I may have found a product but is made for US market but you can get it here

any opinions on what to do

Good Points: It can be used on new plaster, wood, metal and tiles; almost any surface. It sticks like anything. It covers a multitude of sins, and it is water based, so it dries quickly.
Bad Points: It's a little pricey as it's imported from the USA.
General comments: Two coats of Zinsser Bulls Eye Primer-Sealer Stain Killer on any surface, and over-painting with any top coat becomes a pleasure.

Hi Poppy, this product is excellent stuff, quite pricey though, but actually does what it says on the tin, it dries very quickly,
Its also great for bleeding knots on existing paintwork, without the hassle of stripping back to the bare knots then applying knotting, what we would have done in the past.:D
Remember though to clean your brushes out with Meths, not turps or white spirit, as for your roller, you may as well chuck it away when done.0 -
I used ESP - Easy Surface Preparation very sucessfully over a lot of varnished woodwork in my hall. Very easy to apply with a cloth after cleaning off the woodwork then paint after 2 hours. Still expensive but really good.

Thanks guys I emailed a company last night and they said that it will do the job. I know its not cheap product but if it covers the ceiling and makes it white I would glady pay the price
This is what the company in UK says
There are two of the Zinsser range that are ideal for this. Bully Eye 123 (brilliant multipurpose primer- sticks to just about anything, and can be left as a top cover, and acrylic so easy to wash out brushes, etc), or Perma-white (again, excellent ahesion, however this includes anti fungal chemicals- therefore will prevent the growth of mould- ideal for a ceiling!).0 -
Managed to find a local stockists of them
If you contact http://www.zinsser.com/contact.asp UK they can tell you Bulleyes 1-2-3 seems to be a good sealer judging by the response I got from people in trade0
